Have you ever made your own croutons? If you haven’t, it might be easier than you would expect! I always save bread heels, or butts as I call them (lol), to make croutons. It is a great way to use up those bread butts that you might normally throw away.
There is really only one decision you need to make before getting started. What kind of bread do you want to use?? I always love sourdough and typically have that around. You can absolutely use any kind of bread that you already have around but I think sourdough packs a delicious punch.
How do I make these??
Making the croutons is surprisingly simple! All you need is a few ingredients, a sheet pan, and an oven. Maybe a mixing bowl and pan would also be helpful, but not necessary.
I start by mincing the garlic and melting butter. Sweat the garlic in the butter for just a few minutes over medium heat to incorporate the flavors. Dice up your bread and toss with the garlic butter and parmesan cheese. Make sure everything is evenly coated then spread the mixture evenly on your sheet pan. I like to line my sheet pan with parchment paper as well to make clean up a breeze.
Once you’ve got your croutons on the sheet pan you are going to bake them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10-15 minutes until all of the croutons are evenly browned. Allow the croutons to cool if you’re using on a salad. If you are using them to garnish something hot like soup, you can use them right away!
How should I use them?
You can use these croutons for many things. I used this particular batch in a Caesar Salad . You could also use them for topping any kind of salad, garnishing soup, and I even like to eat them as a snack! However you enjoy them, you are sure to love them and I hope you gain a bit more confidence in making things from scratch! Enjoy!
